Braze Audience Filters: How To Setup An Exclusion/Suppression Segment

A short and sweet post that highlights a very helpful Audience Filter! Note: the filter does not live where you’d think it would.

Use Case:

  • We’re sending an Email Campaign to ALL USERS regarding an upcoming pricing update.
  • We’ve created a specific Segment that we would like to exclude from the upcoming launch.

Solution:

1. To set the audience to All Users, add a Segment by clicking the dropdown “Select a segment…” and find the appropriate “All Users” Segment.

Note: For every app that’s installed under the Settings → App Settings page, Braze will automatically create a Segment called “All Users (App Name — platform).

In our dashboard, because we only have one app (ForNowMarketing — Web), this Segment works perfectly for us.

To create a Segment that truly captures All Users from all the apps, simply create a new Segment with absolutely no filters added.

Despite having no filters, you can use this Segment for your future messages that are being sent to every user.

This is the easiest way to capture all users from the Braze Dashboard.

2. Finally, to exclude/suppress the specific Segment, we will not be clicking “Select a segment” (as one may expect), but we will be adding a filter called “Segment Membership”.

We choose this filter as we now have an option to toggle between “Is” or “Is not” in a specific Segment.

This concept can be confusing to visualize as we’re working with double negatives: we will choose the “Is Not” toggle and select the exclusion Segment here.

To put in words, we’re looking for All Users who is (are) not in the Exclusion Segment. This is what our final setup looks like:

Thank you!

It can be tricky to find the Segment Membership filter when setting up audiences with exclusion Segments; hope this blog was helpful!

Thank you for reading, and please feel free to reach out with any questions. We’re happy to help! 🙏
