[Braze-mas 2023, Day 18]

What’s up everyone, my name is Allan, Founder and Consultant at For Now Marketing, and welcome to Day 18 of Braze-mas 2023!

Before we get started, if you have any questions, whether you are currently using Braze or considering using Braze, please feel free to reach out! You can find these addresses and more in the Youtube description below.

Action-Based Campaigns/Canvases Features

Today, we’ll spend some more time on the Action-Based page! Yesterday, we finished going over all the triggers, and today, we will go over some of the additional features that are available when we choose the Action-Based option. Let’s get started!

Schedule Delay

We’re gonna start from the Campaign Builder to check out the Schedule Delay feature. This is very straightforward; after the user performs the trigger action for this Campaign, you have the option to add a delay before you send the message.

Immediately

The default state is “send campaign immediately”, which means no delay.

After

Next, we have “send campaign after, and you enter the number and the measurement of time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, or weeks.

It doesn’t look like there’s a limit to the number you can enter, and if you choose the days or weeks option, you also get the option to add in Intelligent Timing, which is cool. Once again, Intelligent Timing is one of Braze’s Sage AI Intelligence Suite features, and we talked about this feature briefly on Day 13.

On the next

The next option is “on the next”, and we get options to choose a specific day of the week. You also have options to choose Intelligent Timing or set a specific time by choosing the “at” option.

In

And the last option is “in”, where you enter a specific number of calendar days for the delay, and once again with the options to set a specific time or use Intelligent Timing.

Canvas Delay

Now from the Canvas Builder, we don’t actually get the option to add a delay, and that’s because adding delays is one of the main components of the Build Canvas page, so we won’t need to add separate delays in the Entry Schedule page.

Campaign Exception Events

Back at the Campaign Builder, when we add any sort of delay, you’ll see this option: “Unless The User”, and a dropdown with some options. We call this our Exception Event.

We briefly talked about this yesterday, but if a user performs the campaign trigger event, but during this delay, also performs the Exception Event, then the campaign will make an exception and not send the message.

A very common example is an Abandoned Cart Campaign. Say a user added some items to their cart which triggers the Abandoned Cart Campaign with a delay of 4 hours. If during that 4 hour delay, the user triggers the Exception Event of Make Purchase, then this Campaign should not and will not send the Abandoned Cart Email.

Your Exception Event options are:

  • Make Purchase
  • Start Session
  • Perform Custom Event
  • Perform Conversion Event
  • Interact With Campaign
  • Enter a Location
  • Interact With Canvas Step

Canvas Exit Criteria

Once again, on the Canvas Builder, we don’t have an exact feature called Exception Events on the Entry Schedule page, but a sneak peek into the Target Audience page, and you’ll see a feature called Exit Criteria which serves the exact same purpose as Exception Events, but with much more capabilities. More on this in a future video.

Campaign Duration/Entry Window

This next feature is available both on the Campaign and Canvas Builder, and we get to set a Campaign Duration or a Canvas Entry window for when users can receive this Campaign or Enter this Canvas.

You can set a Start Time which is required, as well as an End Time, which is optional.

There’s a very small difference between Campaigns and Canvases on this time aspect.

So for Campaigns, this is a Campaign Duration for when the users are able to receive this message. That means that if a user makes the trigger action, but this Campaign has a delay that goes past the End Time, the user will not receive this message, according to the Braze Documentation.

On the other hand, on the Canvas Builder, this is an Entry Window setting. Meaning this window timeframe is when the users are able to enter the Canvas, but “They may continue to receive messages after this time window ends”. Canvas journey can be days to months long, and a user can very much continue to receive messages, even after the End Time.

By the way, both the Campaign and Canvas Builders show the “local time zone” option as well.

Quiet Hours

The last feature we’ll cover today is the Quiet Hours feature, on the Campaign Builder page. If you enable Quiet Hours, then you get a chance to honor “quiet hours” where Braze will not send a message during the quiet hour times to your users. This is mostly set when the users are sleeping, so the default range is from midnight to 8am, and you have two options to handle messages that are triggered to send at those times.

The first option is to abort the message. The message simply won’t send.

The second option, and the more popular option, is to Send at the next available time. So as soon as Quiet Hours are over, Braze will send this message then.

Quiet Hours are also available on Canvases, and another sneak peek, they can be found on page 4, Send Settings.

Thank you!

That’s it for Day 18.
