Let’s get started with an introduction to our program, LIQUID FOR TECHNICAL MARKETERS, with this question:

What is Liquid?

What is Liquid?

Liquid is an open-source template language created by Shopify and written in Ruby. It is the backbone of Shopify themes and is used to load dynamic content on storefronts.

Liquid is simply another coding language, just like Ruby, Python, Javascript, or the many other languages that exist out there.

And the main purpose of Liquid is to load dynamic or personalized content.

Liquid … is now used by many other hosted web applications.

So because Liquid is an open-source template language, Liquid has been adopted by Customer Engagement Platforms like Braze and Customer.io, meaning these platforms use Liquid to personalize their emails, push notifications, and other messages. The personalization can be as simple as adding the recipient’s first name, or as complex as creating an order confirmation email with details for each of the items.

And before we move on, let’s clarify one thing: my background is in Braze; I am a Braze Expert and Consultant. So this program, LIQUID FOR TECHNICAL MARKETERS, is designed for members who are hoping to improve their Liquid skills within the context of Braze, where their version of Liquid isn’t constantly and quickly changing.

And this program can certainly benefit members using other Customer Engagement Platforms too, like Customer.io.

The next question we’ll talk about is: Why do I like Liquid?

Why do I like Liquid?

In my previous life, I was a high school computer science teacher, so I learned a few coding languages myself, like C, Python, Java, Javascript, HTML/CSS, and a few others.

Each time I was learning a new language, I was overwhelmed by the endless capabilities of each language and all the new libraries, packages, and plug-ins that were being discovered every day.

However, with Liquid, it’s different.

For the first time ever, I feel like I’ve almost mastered this coding language and have a great grasp of every capability of Liquid, because Liquid is:

  • simple
  • provides the fundamental coding capabilities
  • and it isn’t constantly growing.

Don’t get me wrong; Liquid will still require the same logical thinking and problem solving skills as a software developer. However, Liquid, especially Braze Liquid, is a simpler language, so there’s less code for us to learn, and more opportunities for us problem-solve.

And once again, this is within the context of Customer Engagement Platforms, like Braze Liquid. I’m sure Shopify is continuing to add more capabilities to Liquid, but Braze Liquid has stayed consistent for the past many years and still provides plenty of personalization capabilities for Technical Marketers like us.

I strongly believe that with enough practice, any Marketer can become a Technical Marketer who is proficient in Liquid.

Thank you!

So, if you’re ready, please join us on our journey to mastering LIQUID FOR TECHNICAL MARKETERS.

Thank you, and see you next time!
